Disciplines - Snowboarding
Snowboarder X - 30 men and 30 women
In a three-round bracketed competition, six riders at a time race down a course approximately 3,200 feet in length, filled with tabletop jumps, rollers and gaps. In this fusion of motocross and downhill racing, scoring is simple: the first one to the bottom in the final takes home the gold. Scott Gaffney won gold last season in a close race that placed Mark Shultz and Seth Wescott second and third. In the women's division, Line Oestvold of Norway finished first with Aspen local Erin Simmons finishing in second and Amy Johnson in a close third.

Slopestyle - 24 men and 20 women
Riding a course that will undoubtedly represent the new school of snowboarding, competitors take three runs and are judged on amplitude, execution, difficulty, landings and use of the course. The course will incorporate jumps, rails, and gaps to challenge the riders. Last year's winner in the men's division, Kevin Jones of Truckee, Calif., won for the second year in a row to continue his streak of appearance on the Slopestyle podium. Jones has finished in the top two in every Slopestyle competition at the Winter X Games. Jamie Macleod won the women's division, beating out experienced veterans with her technical style.

SuperPipe - 24 men and 20 women
With a best of three runs format, this competition is fast and furious. Riding on a halfpipe that is 50-feet wide, 17-feet high and 400-feet long, athletes continue to develop styles and skills that push up the level of competition every year. Rookie sensation Danny Kass continued his winter 2000-2001 streak by winning gold at Winter X with a classic Kass-A-Roll mixed into a solid series of tricks. On the women's side, Shannon Dunn showed her skills with a first place finish in SuperPipe after winning silver in Slopestyle at the Winter X Games in 2001.

UltraCross - top 16 men from Snowboarder X and Skier X
The UltraCross teams the top 16 men's Snowboarder X finishers with the top 16 men's Skier X finishers in the Winter X Games' only team-based event. Randomly paired riders and skiers race through the Snowboarder X/Skier X course, led first by the Snowboarder X rider. When he crosses the finish line, the Skier X partner's gate is released for the fast and furious finish. Bad Boy Shaun Palmer and ski partner Hiroomi Takaawa of Japan grabbed a narrow first place finish, followed by silver and bronze medallists Jason Evans (SNB)/Isidor Gruener (SKI) and Pontus Staahlkloo (SNB)/Matt Murphy (SKI), respectively.

Look for:
Erin Simmons who trains in Aspen, CO to be on the podium again in Snowboarder X. Youngster Shaun White will compete for the third year now at the age of fifteen. He has been getting better each year and can be expected to break through and appear on the podium in either Slopestyle or SuperPipe.
