Big Air - 12 riders
Moto X has been a part of the X Games since 1999. It debuted at the Winter X Games in 2001 in the form of a big air competition. The Moto X Big Air competition at the 2001 X Games captured the attention of everyone and Moto X Big Air will return at the 2002 Winter X Games in Aspen. Four athletes qualified at the Winter X Games V in 2001 for this year's competition. Four of the riders qualified through the FreeRide Moto X Championships in Nashville, TN. Four more riders were selected as wildcards by the sport organizer, LXD. The 12 riders will compete on a one hit, 10-15 foot snow jump with a 70-foot gap. This was a first in the world of Motocross racing in 2001 and remains to be a competition only held at the Winter X Games. The competition follows a best of three-jump format and the athletes are scored on style, creativity, and trick performance. At the Winter X Games in 2001, Mike Jones won the gold medal in Moto X big air when he debuted the "kiss of death." Tommy Clowers and Clifford Adoptante placed second and third respectively in the competition last winter. At the past summer's X Games in Philadelphia, Kenny Bartram won a gold medal in the Moto X Big Air competition and will be a key athlete to watch this winter as he finished fifth in Big Air last year. Look for: Athletes such as Kenny Bartram, Doug Parsons and Nate Adams are part of a new generation of freestyle Moto X athletes that have recently crossed over to freestyle from the Supercross circuit and are winning competitions like veterans. Parsons and Adams both qualified at the Nashville Championships stunning the crowd with a "super nac nac" and "tsunami" respectively. These three have an average age of 21 and expect to see them all put it on the line to grab the spotlight at the 2002 Winter X Games. Copyright ©2003 ESPN Internet Ventures.
