Brian Deegan warned everyone at Winter X VI that he had something new up his sleeve. When he busted it out in the finals, it was all over. Named "Mandatory Suicide", Deegan
blew away the competition with a double can can, right hand off the bike, landing with both legs on the right side of the bike (sidesaddle).
We decided to get the lowdown on the new trick ...
How long have you been working on Mandatory Suicide?
I started about a couple weeks ago. I knew I was going to have to pull something new. I've been in the game long enough to know you have to come up with something completely new. You gotta just come in with a little variation of something new. Like the double seat-grab, sh*t, I invented the trick. I was doing it to no-handed landers but I knew that wasn't going to win. It had to be something totally different. Just from my years of being here, I knew it would take something like that. I just hoped no one would step up bigger than me.
Were you surprised that no one else really busted out anything new?
Not really because this a big jump at 100 feet. I think it threw a lot of people off and they weren't ready for it. This is my mentality. I don't care how big the jump is, I'll go for it.

Where did the name come from?
From Slayer. I'm stoked on Slayer. I know some of the guys so I had to go with Mandatory Suicide, one of their slower songs.
Is it true that no one, even the Metal Mulisha, knew about the trick?
I didn't tell anyone. I didn't tell my manager, no one. Sh*t, I didn't even tell my dad. No one knew.
What is the difficulty level of the Mandatory Suicide?
I think this is up there with the most difficult tricks I've ever done. Just because it's a new trick. All tricks become easy after you do them enough. But it is a high risk move, coming off a lip that isn't a ramp because it changes so much. Your bike has to be completely straight when you land. Otherwise you are going to crash.
How long will it take for the rest of the pack to catch up?
That's how tricks are, more freestyle. You see someone do it and it's easier to learn it that way. The first guy to do the trick is the gnarliest and you get the glory of naming the trick. That's what's so cool.
What's next?
What's next. I don't know. Right before a contest like this I just go in my backyard and start riding and brainstorm. I watch videos and try to think about what I can do. Right now I don't know what is next. I'll come up with something new .. this isn't the last of me.
