SNOWBOARDING
What would Winter X be without Snowboarding? A cornerstone event of the Winter Games, Snowboarding has the most competitors and disciplines. This year's line-up includes Slopestyle, Big Air, Snowboarder X and the SuperPipe competitions. Riders are making incredible advancements with bigger, more progressive and technical tricks while the industry itself has come into it's own, consistently improving the equipment that helps those riders push the sport to new heights. This year, with a long list of international athletes will be competing alongside the USA's best of the best, the competition will be taken to a new level. It will be easy to see why snowboarding has become one of the world's fastest growing, most exciting and technical sports. BIG AIR Twenty-four men and 24 women will take to the course; one-by-one they will explode down the hill in an attempt to go as big as possible. Once they are up, they have to pull their best trick and stick the landing as they come down. Easier said than done. Each rider will get three runs and will be ranked by their highest score and judged on the best combination of height, distance, difficulty and landing. 2000 Big Air Results (M) Gold: Peter Line (Kirkland, WA) Silver: Jason Borgstede (Eagle River, AK) Bronze: Kevin Jones (Truckee, CA) 2000 Big Air Results (W) Gold: Tara Dakides (Laguna Niguel, CA) Silver: Leah Wagner (Vancouver, BC) Bronze: Jessica Dalpiaz (Salt Lake City, UT SLOPESTYLE Rails, Picnic Tables, Mail Boxes and a 60-foot-gap were only a few of the obstacles riders faced when competing in the Slopestyle competition last year. By eliminating many of the flat spaces from the 1999 course, the 2000 course was a big improvement from that in Crested Butte, CO. In 2001, the incorporation of more new school elements like longer rails, more jib oriented obstacles and a steeper course; this year's course is expected to be more intense than ever. Twenty-four men and 24 women will get three runs each and will be scored on style, amplitude, execution, originality and use of the course. 2000 Slopestyle Results (M) Gold: Kevin Jones (Truckee, CA) Silver: Todd Richards (Worcester, MA) Bronze: Peter Line (Kirkland, WA) 2000 Slopestyle Results (W) Gold: Tara Dakides (Laguna Niguel, CA) Silver: Jamie MacLeod (New London, NH) Bronze: Barrett Christy (Vail, CO) SUPERPIPE With the evolution of bigger pipes and course designers building them better and better each year, riders are consistently finding ways to pull off more technical, combination tricks. While tricks like the 900 are still rarities in the skateboard world, in snowboarding inverted spins and double grabs are commonplace. Last year, the competition was fierce and there is no doubt that with an improved Superpipe course for 2001, the riders will be stepping it up a notch and pulling out all the stops. Twenty-four men and 24 women will have three runs each to utilize the pipe and display their best style, execution and originality. Superpipe (M) Gold: Todd Richards (Worcester, MA) Silver: Ross Powers (Bennington, VT) Bronze: Tommy Czeschin (Mammoth, CA) Superpipe (W) Gold: Stine Brun-Kjeldaas (Oslo, Norway) Silver: Barrett Christy (Vail, CO) Bronze: Natasza Zurek (Vancouver, Canada) SNOWBOARDER X Snowboarder X competitions will feature 30 men and 30 women. In a bracketed competition, 6 riders will race down the hill, around and over insane obstacles and launch over a 60-foot gap to reach the finish line the fastest. Like Skier X, the Snowboarder X rules allow for limited contact between racers. You'll be on the edge of your seat watching the racers pinned against one another, flying down the course at top speeds vying for the hole-shot that will win them the gold. Snowboarder X (M) Gold: Drew Neilson (Vancouver, Canada) Silver: Scott Gaffney (Calgary, Alberta) Bronze: Jason Ford - Solana Beach, CA Snowboarder X (W) Gold: Leslee Olson (Bend, OR) Silver: Carlee Baker (Kelowna, BC) Bronze: Line Oestvold (Honefoss, Norway) ULTRACROSS If ever there was a sport made for ABC's Wide World of Sports, UltraCross is it. UltraCross is a relay race that will pair a snowboarder with a skier as a team on the Skier X course in a speed competition. The teams will be formed from the top 16 finishers from Snowboarder X and Skier X and will then be paired by random draw. The snowboarders will start the race and as soon as the snowboarder crosses the finish line, the starting gate will open for the skier partner. A crowd favorite at last year's contest, organizers are expecting the event to be even more exciting this year.
