SKIING
With each decade, skiing has added new disciplines, formats and talent, which have allowed room for new events and competitions. Skiers are now developing spectacular aerial mastery in the halfpipe and terrain parks that were created in resorts for the snowboarders. The cultural and philosophical gap between skiers and snowboarders is narrowing because the new skiers are showing skill on terrain that has traditionally been for snowboarders. The new movement in skiing, sometimes called freeskiing, was called extreme skiing until athletes pushed to rename the sport in order to better reflect the type of skiing it actually is -- allowing athletes to individualize their own runs and their own style of skiing. The sport of skiing has taken a bit of momentum back from snowboarding, spurred by several talented skiers who weren't interested in racing, but rather demonstrating their skill, control and creativity in jumps, obstacle-filled courses and raw back-country terrain. BIG AIR Twenty-one skiers compete against the wind, common sense, and each other to see who pull the biggest and most technical trick, yet still land on both skis. Some of the world's best will have you holding your breath as they defy gravity, and invert themselves in ways you would not even imagine. Mid-air grabs, flips and spinning tricks the FAA will have to investigate, is just a little of what you will see at this year's event. Competitors have three runs to get up, pull their hardest trick, and land in an attempt to impress the judges above and beyond the rest of the pack.
