Cline, Crist Claim Skier X
By Daniel Dodd EXPN.com Feb. 02, 2001
Mount Snow, Vt. -- Aleisha Cline isn't too fond of looking back on her performance at the 2000 Winter X Games. A nagging shoulder injury coupled with a crash in the finals kept her off the podium and unable to retain her Skier X gold medal earned the year before.
All was forgotton on Friday when Cline found heway back into the top spot with a come from behind run in the Skier X finals.
"It's an odd year. I guess I like to win on odd years because '99 was good, last year not so good, but this year I'm just so excited."
After falling to third place, Cline took advantage of a soft landing by Jonsson and Brown, passing the pair in a flash and never looking back.
"I really don't know. I just wanted to win," said Cline. "That is all there is to it! I'm damn excited!"
The gold medal performance seemed to bring out a renewed confidence in Cline who is still recovering from a shoulder injury from 1999 that has given her problems ever since.
"If I want to win, you better let go because I am going to win!"
On the Men's side, Zach Crist upstaged his older brother Reggie to take his first Winter X Games gold medal. He finished with a bronze in the same event last year.
"It was real touch and go," said Crist. "I was right behind Tomas Andersson. I made a couple nice moves at the exit of the whoopies and it worked out. I am really stoked."
After getting off to a slow start out of the gate, Crist stayed on course and built up enough speed to inch his way to the front of the pack.
"We had been battling each other all day," said older brother Reggie who finished in sixth place. "It was a tight race all the way. I'm just stoked he's on the podium taking the gold. With Zach it kind of gives you two chances to win and he stepped up today and I'm just so stoked for him."
