Although he's a little banged up, nothing will keep Peter Line away from the X Games. We've got Line online all week with you on EXPN.com. We'll have daily updates with the 6-time snowboarding medalist, interviews and even a chat or two as well. Get inside Peter's mind for his take on this year's competition.
Check out our Q&A with Peter to catch up on things:
I tore my ACL in August. And although the rumors are saying I tore it on our slider system on our snowboards, that's not true. I just landed completely flat and that tends to break your knee. And then you dinged your elbow? I fell doing a slide (Jan. 22) on some stupid box at Snow Summit and chipped my elbow two chips in my humerus bone. So that's keeping me out of the X Games right now because of the big full arm cast. I didn't really have any good tricks going on, so it might be a good thing. When will you be back? I get this (cast) off on the 6th of February, and so after that I think it's a few days of rehab and I'll probably be 100 percent again. Are riders pushing the envelope? Is that why we are seeing so many injuries? I remember back in the day when someone blew out their knee or they'd have kind of a major injury and they're toast for their career because snowboarding is progressing so fast that being out for that long you've stepped so far behind that you can't step up again. But nowadays ... the sport's not progressing as quickly as it was so you can make a comeback fairly quickly after these injuries. Since there's not a lot of tricks to be invented any more, especially straight air tricks good straight jump tricks that rails are getting to be kind of new stepping grounds for progressive snowboarding. Is this a good time for slopestylers? For the ones that are into rails, yeah! For the ones that aren't, no. It's the progression of the sport, so if you want to be a top professional you've got to be able to ride that stuff everything. Your thoughts on the halfpipe? I'm not much of a halfpipe competitor. I love riding all the time, though ... Now all the pipes are huge and that's actually progressing the sport because you can go 12-15 feet out and that's a whole new barrage of tricks that are possible. I'm glad they're standardizing (the pipe size) now as opposed to 2-3 years ago ... I quit pipe riding because they were so small, so cheesy. Who are you watching in Superpipe? That Danny Kass kid just goes ballistic; young kid, bones made of rubber. I like watching anybody that goes huge. Mike Michalchuk doesn't necessarily have my favorite style, or trick preference, but I love the guy for going so crazy and huge. I love anybody that pushes it 100 percent or more. I kind of shy away from the guys that just do their stock runs year after year. They know who they are. Todd (Richards), I admire him too because he's been in the sport forever. Every year he has new tricks and pushes it still. I mean he's 31, I guess that's kind of old compared to all of us. Snowboarders are getting older these days, they're all not 19 anymore they're 24 ... Who are you watching in Slopestyle? K.J., Kevin Jones. Todd Richards has been riding some crazy, good air, too. I think he's got a lot of fire in his belt right now. He's doing rails crazy too. Jussi Oksanen is going nuts. J.P. Walker, because there's a lot of rails on the course I think he's a big contender. There's a lot of guys in there that are riding pretty sick. Jeff Anderson, I think, is doing pretty crazy on rails too. What about Big Air? I kind of think it's anyone's game. I put all my money on Jussi (Oksanen). He's a switch-backside 900 that I think he's going to surprise stomp. This year the jump's not terribly huge. So the jumps, with the tricks, aren't to be quite as crazy. Big Air is only one trick, one judged jump so like it's anybody's game just land that one crazy trick that they know. Which famous captain lived in Vermont? Kangaroo? Correct! Did you ever watch Captain Kangaroo? Yeah, loved his haircut! What is Vermont's nickname? The maple state. Close. The Green Mountain State. Vermont has the greatest ratio of (blank) to people in the country. Armadillo? Cows. N'Sync or Backstreet Boys? Which dies first? Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera? Britney. ![]() | ||||||||||||||||
