Peter Line on Boards, Bindings, and Bjork
By Jason Kuehn EXPN.com Feb. 04, 2001
So is there anything new coming out from any of your companies, I noticed everyone is wearing the puffy jackets now, is that coming back?
Those have really been popular because it's cold out here in Vermont. They are the warmest jackets around. We have a puffy jacket in our clothing line. Is Forum changing its graphical direction? They had a clean techie look but your new model is a little roughed up with a hand-drawn art style. Well yeah, the next year's graphics style is different. I have Jim Morrison on one of my boards. Jimi Hendrix and Sid Vicious as well. My graphics include all the stuff I'm influenced by. I try to think really hard and have it be a personal thing. I saw a pretty cool Airwalk graphic recently. Rippey's new graphic is pretty cool, very Conan The Barbarian looking. A lot of the forum boards are digital-tech looking. Devun Walsh has a cool looking digital bug on his new model. Do you think the whole Volcom design style is starting to influence the snowboard companies? Is that the new direction or is the clean look going to hold on? I think you can only have a certain style for awhile and then you have to change it up because people get tired of it. Clean was cool for awhile but it's pretty much who the leaders are. They have a style and a lot of people take that look and then people get sick of it. You move on to new stuff. These dirty, full board graphics are cool now. A couple of years down the line they will get old too and we'll go to something else. As far as Forum goes, we are doing a new video called "True Life", it should be out in September and it has more of a tour influence. We are trying to make sure it snows where we are, that's the hardest part right now because the whole west coast is pretty much rain. I'm going to be traveling a lot, as soon as I get this cast off.
It could be something like that. It was a late snowfall this year and everything started late. I know that next year there are a lot of new ideas coming out so our new stuff is going to look quite a bit different. There are not too many real leaders in the outerwear industry. There's Burton, Bonfire, Four Square, and Special Blend. Volcom is doing some cool things but really haven't been that strong of a factor because they have been gradually getting into it. But I've seen some of their stuff and it's pretty dope. They're taking a slower approach, which is working out good for them. Are there any new products coming out for next year? I know that you have a new adjustable binding system. Yeah, we have a new binding out next year to go along with the sliders on our boards. The bindings are completely hand adjustable on the hill. After you screw mount the bindings, the forward lean, strap sizing, heel cup adjustments and all the others can be adjusted without the use of a screwdriver. The new forward lean device on our heelcup can set the highbacks back so you get your heel all the way back into the heelcup. Once you strap in, push the forward lean button and crank it down, it puts more forward lean into your stance and you can adjust it the way you want it. That's cool, so I know you are a Bjork fan, have you seen the new Bjork movie? Yeah, I have seen "Dancer In the Dark." It's a knarly movie, kind of long and it's hard to get through the beginning but the ending is insane. She does such a good job at the end. You walk out of the theatre and are like "oh my God". Her performance at the end is just crazy good, she kills it. So what do you think of her new album? The new album goes along with the movie, kind of like what Madonna did for the Evita soundtrack. It's not really her usual music, it was influenced by the movie, but it is still kind of cool, it's different. It wasn't really my favorite but it's not that bad. I have a poster of her that I just saw on Ebay for sale for $4000. She has so much musical talent. She releases different singles for each of her songs, different styles from album to album. ![]() | |||||||||||||||||
