FIFTH ANNUAL WINTER X GAMES, FEB. 2-6
When ESPN televises its fifth annual Winter X Games Feb. 2-6, it will mark the 11th major X Games event that ESPN has organized and televised since 1995 (including six summer X Games). ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC Sports will combine to televise 13 original hours of coverage from the signature action sports event, which will take place Feb. 1-4 at Mount Snow, Vermont. ESPN will begin coverage Friday, Feb. 2 at 9 p.m. ET. More than 250 of the world's top athletes will compete in 15 events from five sports categories. Snowboarding, the cornerstone of the Winter X Games with eight events, will be joined by Skiing (three events), Snowmobiling (two events), Moto X (one event) and UltraCross (one event). Winter X Games production plans will include CableCam, FollowCam, HelmetCam and many other point-of-view and specialty cameras, which have become an X Games signature. ESPN's coverage of the first five summer X Games has resulted in critical acclaim in the form of six Sports Emmy Awards, including at least one from each year. ESPN recently announced that it had selected Philadelphia to host the next two summer X Games, the first and definitive multi-event competition for summer action sports, beginning with the seventh annual event, August 17-23, 2001. The X Games showcases 350 of the world's best action sport athletes competing in a variety of sports ranging from skateboarding to aggressive in-line skating to street luge. In addition, ESPN also recently announced plans for a major global expansion of the X franchise, with X Games qualifiers to be held on five continents in the coming months and the debut of the X Games Global Challenge in 2002. According to a Harris Interactive Survey, ESPN's X Games is the second most appealing sporting event to kids in the U.S. aged 6 to 17. The X Games placed just behind the Olympic Games, in appeal to those kids aware of the event. Beyond the X Games and Winter X Games, ESPN also owns and operates a variety of other events.
