Skateboarding in the Snow?
By Cassandra L. Watson EXPN.com Feb. 02, 2001
MOUNT SNOW, Vt. For all you skateboarders out there who thought about snowboarding, but just didn't like the feel of the snowboard ... slap on your parkas and get ready to ride.
At this year's Winter X Games, Burton brought along a few of its new snowdecks called the Junkyard and let a few athletes take them out on a test run. Who were the lucky athletes you might ask? Oh, just a few guys by the names of Tony Hawk, Shaun White and Todd Richards. The three, being watched by a few curious autograph seekers, played around with the Junkyard, acting like kids half their ages and in Shaun's case that would be 7 years old.
Getting a chance to hang out with Tony Hawk can't be too bad either. "It's cool. I've skated with him before, but to be able to go snowskating with him it's pretty rad." Hawk, who is doing some work for ESPN at the Winter X Games, also enjoyed the snowdeck. "These thing are really fun, like a whole different way of riding," said Hawk. "They work and they're really functional. Of course I like them because they're more like skateboards." Vince Lavecchia, Marketing Coordinator for Burton, says the Junkyard is quite popular. "People are real happy with them. They are a lot easier to ride compared to another snowdeck out which is just base model plastic," said Lavecchia who is here with about 30 riders from the Burton team. "(The other snowdeck) doesn't have the ski underneath and this one is nice because you can turn and stop and do a little more tricks, but people are real psyched on them." Lavecchia explains the basic concept of the Junkyard. "Basically it's taking the trucks and wheels off your skateboard and putting a ski on the bottom. There's a ski on the bottom that you ride on and then there's a deck above that you stand on and it's like basically skateboarding on snow." Todd Richards describes the Junkyard as "one of the best times I've had just going out and messing around in the snow." Lookout, we may have another Winter X sport on our hands. ![]() | |||||||||||||||||
