Dec. 22, 2000
2001 Winter X Games Moto X
Big Air - 10 riders
Moto X has been a part of the X Games since 1999. It debuts at the Winter X Games in 2001 in the form of a big air competition.
Five of the riders qualified through the U.S. Open of Freestyle Motocross and five were selected by the sport organizer, LXD. The 10 riders will compete on 10-15-foot one-hit snow jump with a 70-foot gap. This is a first in the world of motocross racing. The competition follows a best of three-jump format.
At this past summer's X Games in San Francisco, Travis Pastrana won the freestyle competition and Tommy Clowers won the step up contest.
Look for: Tommy Clowers, a 28-year old San Diego, Calif. native was the number one qualifier for the 2000 summer X Games. Although he broke his wrist in late 1999, Clowers is a terror to any moto X competitor.
Overheard: Travis Pastrana credits his popularity with the fans to freestyle, stating, "it really started at the X Games. It's amazing how many people know about freestyle (moto x), even though it's still a new sport. The sport is really taking off right now."
