Getting Better with Age
By Cassandra L. Watson EXPN.com Feb. 03, 2001
Barrett Christy is one of X Games' most decorated athletes. The winner of 9 Winter X medals and one Summer X gold, Barrett is one of the premiere snowboarders in the world. On February 3, Barrett celebrates another milestone ... her 30th birthday. Barrett took a few mintues out of her busy schedule to talk about turning 30, how long she'll continue to compete and life in general.
Oh God, I knew you were going to ask me that question. I'm going to be 30 on Saturday. Do you feel any different, any older? Did you know there is a competitor here that is 14? Really! You know what, honestly, I feel better every year. I don't think that I feel any older, I feel maybe a little smarter. Do you think your experience has a lot to do with your success and the way you approach a competition? I think so. I still like to do everything and I don't limit myself to just one event because I think snowboarding's fun and I just want to do the fun aspects of it. How long do you think you'll keep competing? Who knows? I couldn't have guessed five years ago that I'd still be doing it. As long as I'm having fun at it, I'm going to keep doing it and as long as I feel like I'm still progressing. I want to continue to ride. Is there anything you want to say to your fans? I hope I'm a inspiration to people, because I used to think of 30 as old. I'm 30 and I don't feel old. Snowboarding is fun regardless of how old you are and where you're from or what size or sex you are. Just continue to have fun and pursue your goals and don't let stuff stand in your way. ![]() | |||||||||||||||||
