Carey Hart Chat Transcript
Carey has been keeping busy this year hanging out with girlfriend P!nk, filming music videos with Kid Rock, and healing up from last year's injuries. We're lucky to have Carey take time out of his busy schedule to chat with you. Carey made history with his first attempt at a backflip in competition at the 2000 Gravity Games. He tried the flip again at X Games VII Moto X Big Air and came down hard. After recovering from his injuries he's got his eyes on the prize for redemption in X Games VIII. The following is a transcript of the August 8 chat: Moderator: Ok, Carey is here and ready to answer some questions.Carey Hart: Hi guys, I just want to thank everyone for turning out and thanks for being such great fans. Ryan Bakersfoeld cali: When you first started riding were you any good? Do you have any advice for someone who has just started riding on how two take that first big leap. Carey Hart: I started when I was four and I was on a Moto bike before a real bike. Just have fun with it right now. There is no pressure to hit huge jumps right now. Just progress. Andy (Connecticut): Hey you have some balls for pullin' that backflip. I know I've read that you wouldn't be touching a backflip ever again. Do u think you'll change your mind? Carey Hart: Yeah, I pretty much ate my words. I have been doing them now and I have a foam pit. The first ever MTX foam pit. I'm ready but I'm not going to kill myself to do it. If I am comfortable with it I'll throw it. Steve- Whitehouse,NJ: Dude man, Carey you crazy. How did it feel to be the first man to pull a backflip on a dirtbike? Carey Hart: It was great, a big point for me. I have a big involement with BMX and I was psyched that I made the full rotation and got on my wheels. I didn't ride it out, but I didn't care. MELBOURNE: Forget the backflip, When are you going to do a forward flip? Everyone is doing them out here in Australia, cowboy up! Carey Hart: Sure thing...send that picture in and I'll believe it. MotoXRuler47: Carey how do you recover from all of your injuries so quickly? Do you do any sort of training besides rehab? Carey Hart: I guess the very first possible point I can ride, I do. I am still a bit jacked from earlier injuries. I think I bounce back quick because I really push it. ghostride (Philly): What happened at the Transworld shoot? I couldn't belive you got injured right as you were ready to get back in the saddle. Carey Hart: Yeah, that was pretty lame. That was my first big thing back and I wanted to do something big for the spread. It was a pretty impossible Step-up down and I came up short and crashed. I destroyed my thumb in the process. Adriana (miami): Hey Carey!!! What age did U get your first tattoo and which one means the most to you? You're hot and your g/f rocks! Carey Hart: Thanks Adriana. My first tattoo was a total whitetrash skull and flames on my chest but I've had it covered up. My most important one is probably my Dad's name on my neck after he got cancer and then Pink and I have "Tru Luv" tattooed on our wrists. Bigg T (Bakersfield, CA): How did you hook up with Pink? Carey Hart: We met at the X Games like right before I hit the flip. Then we met up in Vegas about three months later and he just hit it off. Tickled Pink (Seattle): Is it weird going out with Pink and people who don't know the motocross scene not recognizing you? How often does it happen the other way around? Carey Hart: it's not weird at all. She's so level headed and I'm not a rockstar or anything. Everywhere we go she is recognized, but I like being a bit in the background. But when the hardcore fans recognize me, that's great. CareyRules: Hey everyone is focusing on your crashes. You still rule Moto and your one tough Mofo for throwing what you do. What's up for the rest of the year? Videos, movies, etc. Carey Hart: I'm super hyped on a lot of stuff going on. I am eager to get through the X Games and then get to a lot of other stuff. I am doing the Boom Boom Huckjam and then an ESPN "Huckjam" type thing then a big tour of Australia and New Zealand with Deegan and Faisst and some other guys. James (Australia): What do you think is the gnarlest trick out there? I know the flip is badass but I think the Rock Solid is crazy. Carey Hart: The rock solid is sick but everything is so tech now. The flip is ballsy though. CareyKills: What do you think of the Mulisha guys and all of their antics? I heard Deegan beat up a cop or something. Carey Hart: I don't know about Deegan but freestyle has its different personalities and it opens up different doors to people. Travis Deegan and I are all different people. Ben Davis (Christchurch New Zealand): Hey Carey! What was it like being surrounded by major extreme sports stars on the Boom Boom Huckjam Tour? Are you looking Forward to that later this year?? Carey Hart: I'm counting the days till the tour begins. A lot of my good friends are outside of Moto. I have just as many friends in Skate and BMX. The Huckjam was awesome though. Everything was choreographed and it was an amazing show. emma: Hey! What's your favorite trick? Carey Hart: Mine is the old school whip. I like just going out and finding big 4th gear natural jumps and just going for it. FMXer (Reno): Are you still rocking the mohawk? What made you start growing that out? Carey Hart: Actually it was a deal I made with my dad. He came down with cancer and had to go through chemo. So to lighten the blow a bit and I said I was going to grow the mohawk until he kicked the cancer. So when he started losing his hair I shaved the mohawk in. He kicked it July so I shaved it off then. He's doing great now. EatDIRT: Carey some guys in MTX are metal. Some guys in MTX are apple pie. Some guys in MTX are rockstars. What's your style? Carey Hart: A lot of people think I am rockstar, but I don't go after the whole bad boy thing. I just rock my own style, ride my bike and have a good time doing it. I try not to take it too serious. PT/Vegas: Do you ever burn your thighs on your stripper pole in your house? Carey Hart: There have been no strippers in my house...it's just the quickest way to get around my house. I have a fireman's pole, I live in a two-story. pyrider89: Carey, it seems to be more important to you to step the level up and raise the bar just a little bit rather than to win a contest, is that you're attitude? Carey Hart: I've never been too big into contest results and all that. I just want to push things and do more, progress. Crash&Burn: Where is your favorite place to ride? Do you like competitions more than filming or riding with friends? Carey Hart: I prefer filming and just riding than comps. I love Cainesville, Utah. I'ts just an epic place to ride. Carey Hart: In everyday life it would have to be my dad. He has done so much. He has been a single parent since 22 with me. He has always been there for me, he just keeps it all together and beat the cancer so... alex (concord cali): Where did you get recognized for your talents? Carey Hart: People gave me respect when I was racing and it was kinda of a strange time. They wanted a clean image and I was kinda rough. But I was still filming and doing my own thing. MetalMulish: Some skaters and stuff hate the X Games and think that it ruined their sport? It doesn't really seem like FMX riders feel the same. What do you think of that attitude and how the X Games has kinda blown up these sports? Carey Hart: For FMX you can't have anyone complain because we are at a different level then we would have been. Skate has gone through so many transitions so those guys have their own opinion, but I think even if you don't fit the mold it's great for the sport overall. MtX125: Hey, what tricks you think you gonna be pulling at the X? Carey Hart: I'm only in Best Trick and I am focused on flips, but if I do it next year I have something else I am working on, but that is going to take awhile. Sam (Alabama): Hi Carey I have two questions. What do you think went wrong on the flip in Philly and do you remember anything after you hit the ground? thanks...glad to see you back on your bike. Carey Hart: Everything went wrong...wrong time...I had a plate in my shoulder all of it. I remember all of it, floating in the air, the hospital ride and the months of recovery. Peeps (Dawson Creek): With Pastrana injured, who do you think has the best shot at winning the Freestyle at the X-games. Carey Hart: So much of it depends on judges. With Gravity it was a flip contest. Freestyle is a whole run, not just one trick. Metz and Drake have a great shot. It's a judges event. No Fear (Coursegold, CA): Which rider do you think is the gnarliest, which has the best style and who is technically best? Carey Hart: I think that Travis is the gnarliest. Drake McElroy is the best up and coming rider and then tech wise it's tough. Style is big with me and I'll have to stick with Drake on that. Haywood (Henderson NV): I have always enjoyed your tattoos, and was wondering if you have those done in Las Vegas and who the artist is? Carey Hart: My sleeves were done at Soul Expressions in Cali and my chest, neck and back were done at Mach 5 by Dave in Vegas. MtX125: What size and make bike did you start on? Carey Hart: My first bike was a 1979 JR 50. HartMan: Carey, what was it like to work with Kid Rock? Are you down with his music? What other artists do you like? Carey Hart: Kid is a cool person. His music is good. I'm really big with Pennywise, Social D and all that. I'm into punk rock. Kid is great though, he went out of his way to hook me up and let me jump in his video. gaber (Seattle): When you first threw the back flip at the Gravity Games was that the first time you had practiced it on a Moto X bike or did you try it into a foam pit or other soft landing first? Carey Hart: That was the first time I went for it was at that competition. I just got a foam pit, so I am basically training right now for Best Trick. KeepItRealbaby: Are you into any other sports or activities besides MTX? What do you do to chill out? Carey Hart: I'm big into BMX. I ride a ton. I hang out with TJ and all. I ride a lot in the winter. I snowboard and skate abit. I dabble I guess. Rev. Lovejoy: I read something about you hanging out with Tommy Lee a while ago, are you guys working on something together? Carey Hart: No we are just friends. We hang out when he is in Vegas or I am in LA. Ryan (Carlsbad): What do you think of Metzger's flip? Carey Hart: I think it was rad that Metz was flipping on gaps. That is what progression is all about. The Gravity games event looked cool but it came down to a flip contest. Hopefully the judges look at everything, not just flips. Tommy Peterson ( Wasilla, AK): What do you see FMX being 5 years from now? What I mean is what do you expect to see and how popular you see the sport being? Carey Hart: What I would like to see would be freesstyle on the same level as supercross. Maybe the same size track as well. I hope it stays to it's roots though and doesn't get all glammed out like supercross. Social D (New York): What do you think is the next big trick to be conquered? 360s? Body varial stuff? Carey Hart: I want to start working on body varial stuff into my foam pit. I've been thinking about it for awhile. If I had my pit earlier I think I would have those dialed for X Games this year. Maybe next year though. Moderator: That's all for Carey, he has to run. Thanks for tuning in everyone and don't forget there are more live chats coming from the X Games. Carey Hart: Thanks a lot for coming to the chat. Keep an eye out for me at the X Games and on tour. Keep it on two wheels. Copyright ©2002 ESPN Internet Ventures.
