Just minutes after the final run of the first true street contest, the best
tricks session began. Only six of the 10 competitors skated in this event.
The contest was held on three different locations throughout the street
course.
1. The curved benches at the top of City Hall:
Koston was one of the first people to start the session, but he began before
the actual contest started. He pulled an unofficial kickflip nose manual
nollie flip out, along with some other Koston staples during the official
session.
Senn, the beast, did an ollie 50/50 on the 45-degree wall popping off on to
the bench, once again seeing more than most skaters.
Kerry Getz fit in a number of technical manual variations such as a manual
kickflip out, and a nose manual nollie heel out.
McCrank pulled a front tail slide/ front side flip out, then a nollie
half-cab/ switch crooks/ 180 out, after the crowd was walking away to the
next obstacle.
2. The Jersey barrier down the stairs:
Kareem Campbell jumped in on the action with a couple of huge ollies
clearing the entire Jersey barrier.
Kerry Getz came through with a smoothed and determined front side nose
slide.
Josh Kalis repeated his amazing feat, nose blunt sliding within his first
couple tries. He was landing on switch tail slides, but couldn't roll away.
Chris Senn's skating was unstoppable the entire day. Pulling a high-speed
front side board slide and slamming on a front side lip slide (which he
made), sacrificing pain for pleasure.
Rick McCrank released an onslaught of tricks on every obstacle, front side
nose grind, switch crooked grinding, front board slide, and just missing a
nose slide big spin out.
Eric Koston made it look way too easy with another back side tail slide,
back side nose grind, and front side 180 nose grind. He blew minds with his
backside nose blunt slide, crushing the session.
3. The Booter transfer:
Chris Senn took his ingenious approach to this obstacle another step by
ollieing up the Hubba ledge to 5.0/ 180 out.
Kerry Getz rolled away with a double kick flip transfer from high to low.
Rick McCrank destroyed all hopes for anyone to get gold in this event by
front side flipping, switch flipping (first try), and a switch hard flip
(second try).
Best trick results:
6th Kareem $800
5th Kalis $900
4th Senn $1,000
3rd Koston $1,300
2nd Getz $2,000
1st McCrank $4,000
As the award ceremonies were being held, the "Golden Rail" disappeared into
thin air. Within an hour City Hall was back to its usual number of visitors.
By 9:00 p.m. all the tents and people were gone. Now the frustrated cops can
go back to issuing summonses to the people loved by so many fans.
Kerry Getz's last words as he received his true street gold were "Free Love
Park."
