Q&A: Pastrana's Parents
EXPN caught up with Robert and Debby Pastrana as they watched their son Travis launch himself over the bar at Moto X Step Up on Monday night. Here's what they had to say about their superstar son:
EXPN: Are you nervous or relaxed when Travis rides?
Debby Pastrana: Always nervous. This is a little more relaxing than racing or freestyle, but always nervous. I never feel like he's gonna get hurt, but, yeah, your heart drops. EXPN: Are you still amazed at some of the things your son can do on a motorcycle? Robert Pastrana: (Laughs). We are. We're truly amazed by what he pulls off like in that freestyle contest the other day, I guess it was Friday. He hadn't practiced, we thought, maybe a medal, but probably not. But to go out there to show the guys what he had was incredible. Yeah, he amazes us everyday. (Yes, Travis did win gold in Moto X Freestyle)
Debby: Probably his positive attitude. EXPN: How does handle the pressure that comes along with fame at such a young age? Robert: We're not sure how he does as well as he does, but talking to Travis you would think he was one of the kids in his high school that didn't even do a letter or sport, that just was going through the motions. To talk to Travis you wouldn't know that he was an athlete of any special caliber. He's just Travis. Always has been, hopefully always will be. EXPN: What's the best perk of having a famous kid? Debby: Besides the money? (Laughs) Travis is Travis. I always tell people he's no different than anybody else. He really isn't. Robert: He's building his own security for the future. He can do what he wants and know that he's covered. Travis topped out at 32 feet, giving him the silver medal. Were Travis's parents disappointed? Nahhhhh. He's just Travis. |
