First Female Gold Medallist at the Asian X Games
2001 Asian Xtour Taipei, presented by TOYOTA
10 August, 2001 Taiwan - Taipei City became a battleground as the sexes went to war for glory and gold at the recent Asian Xtour Taipei presented by Toyota. More than 10,000 screaming fans cheered on 200 action sports participants at an event which saw Asia's first female gold medallist in a mixed field competition at an X Games event.
Huang Shih-Yun took out the Gold in the Bicycle Stunt Park against a field of 4 guys. Her victory was all the sweeter when she also took Bronze in the Flatland competition. Again, she was the only female competitor.
Action athletes seem to be getting younger and younger. Last month three-year-and-nine-month-old inliner Khunthep Pragranrat of Thailand set the record for the youngest (and smallest) X athlete. Seeking to go one better, Taiwan's Chen Yi-Chao, who is a mere three years and eight months, took part in both the inline and skateboard events!
Fate smiled on the event, which was almost a washout last year thanks to three typhoons and an earthquake which did their best to disrupt the competition. This year, however, the mighty X proved stronger than the elements. This year, we miraculously escaped the wrath of two typhoons that passed by either side Taipei City, leaving the athletes and spectators to enjoy sunshine and some excellent action.
The Taipei Xtour presented by Toyota was the third Tour of the 2001 season, and the second time that ESPN's X Games competition has been held in Taiwan.
It is the only opportunity for Taiwanese athletes to enter the Asian X Games Qualifier presented by Toyota, which will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in January 2002. The Taiwanese athletes qualifying for this regional event will competitive for a share of US$100,000 prize money. Top finishers will also receive a medal and an invitation to compete in ESPN's X Games in the USA.
