2002 AXQ - Just the Facts
Date: January 28th - Feburary 3rd, 2002 Venue: Kuala Lumpur City, Malaysia Asian X Games Qualifier IV presented by TOYOTA (AXQ) Year 2002 will see the AXQ sweeping into Kuala Lumpur City, Malaysia, its new competition venue-cum-home for the next three years After enjoying a stint of electrifying action along the breathtaking beaches of Thailand's Phuket Island, Kuala Lumpur City is clearly fitting to play AXQ host in the new season with an "extreme" landmark of its very own: the Petronas Twin Towers, tallest twin tower in the world. This awesome feat of architecture will form the backdrop for the inaugural 2002 AXQ as well as the subsequent two AXQ in 2003 and 2004. Even as the X continues to showcase new heights in action sports, the AXQ is likewise growing remarkably. For starters, Australia and Japan, two countries previously under the AXQ umbrella, have now broken away to host their own homegrown X Games Qualifier. Still, extreme sports fans need not worry about any dilution of the X's trademark thrills 'n' spills, as we will still bear witness to over 200 top action sports athletes from Asia and around the world competing for prize money, medals and the most coveted prize of all - a qualifying spot in the 2002 Summer X Games in the U.S. Plus, also in the bag this year will be an increase in the number of qualifying spots to the US Summer X; as well as Skateboard Park, Bicycle Stunt Park and Flatland coming in as competition events, a mark up from their previous status as solely exhibition sport. Junior X Games III presented by TOYOTA (JX) Entering into its 3rd successive year, the Junior X Games will not be left behind either. The Junior X Games will provide three days of competition for children aged 6 - 14 from 12 different countries throughout Asia Pacific. They will compete in events modeled after the X Games. The three-day event will also include clinics and X Games workshops with professional X Games athletes. The competition will use modified ramps, smaller climbing walls and a mini-halfpipe.
