Junior X Games Crowns Five Winners
PHUKET, Dec. 5, 2000 - Skateboards clattered against the stands in noisy applause as the boisterous crowd gave a rousing cheer for winners at the Disney Channel/ESPN Junior X Games II, a 3-day competition held in Phuket Island dedicated to extreme sporting athletes aged 14 years and under.
Five championship athletes were awarded an all expenses paid trip for a family of four to Disneyland. In addition, 16 athletes were awarded medals in each of the four sporting categories (Aggressive In-line skating; Skateboarding, Bicycle Stunt and Sport Climbing). Recognizing young athletes for their sporting achievements, the Junior X Games II presented by TOYOTA is considered the 'pinnacle' of extreme sporting events.
This year's event has attracted more than 130 athletes from 15 Asia-Pacific countries. The awards ceremony was attended by star pros and watched by hundreds of happy revelers, soaking up the electrifying atmosphere at the Patong Beach, Phuket island site.
Commenting at the awards ceremony, Mr Jon Niermann, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Walt Disney International, said, "This year's Junior X-Games II was the largest and most competitive yet with 130 athletes from 15 countries taking part. In the three days of competition we have witnessed remarkable feats of athleticism and no doubt many of our competitors have achieved their own personal goals."
