ESPN and the Tube Film Festival have announced a call for submissions for the world's premiere annual action sports film/video festival. This year's event will be held on August 20th and 21st in conjunction with the 2001 X Games in Philadelphia. The Tube Film Festival is being presented by ESPN and EXPN.com - the sports network's web site dedicated to action sports and lifestyle.

The Seventh Annual X Games will once again play host to this two-day film and video festival, drawing on entries presented from filmmakers around the globe. "Our inaugural event last year in San Francisco was successful beyond our wildest expectations," said Ron Semiao, vice president, programming at ESPN. "We expect Tube to be a permanent part of the X Games."

Filmmakers will be asked to submit a short trailer for their film, which may then be posted on EXPN.com. Web site visitors will be able to view the trailers and vote for their favorite films - the top selections being among those screened at the Tube Film Festival.

Last year San Francisco hosted the inagural Tube Film Festival featuring 24 films, including features, shorts and animations selected from hundreds of submissions from around the world. Chosen by and a panel of judges comprised of athletes and filmmakers, last year's winners were:

Best Overall Film
SETH: THE HARD WAY (4 Leaf Entertainment in association with Enuf Said Productions, produced by Seth Enslow, Bryan Jordan, Bobby Williams, Erick Hilton, and Mike Shaw), a down and dirty look at gravity-defying daredevil motocross maniac Seth Enslow.

Best Highlight Film
SEPTEMBER SESSIONS (directed by Jack Johnson, produced by Kelly Slater, co-produced by Emmett Malloy), the latest surf documentary from watery wunderkind Jack Johnson.

Best Animated Film
BILLY'S BALLOON (directed Don Hertzfeltdt), a dark and humorous look at a boy and his pugilistic balloon.

Audience Choice
MIRACLE BOY AND NYQUIST (directed by Steve Olpin, Executive produced by Kevin Foxe and Mitch Edwards, produced by Stin Anderson), an exciting look at two of the world's fiercest and most popular BMX riders Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist.

Festival director Ken Karn expects more from the filmmakers this time. "Most of the entries were what I call tricks and travel logs: lots of action and scenery but slim on storytelling and emotion. We're hoping to get filmmakers to push their work further, just like the action sports athletes do."

The 2001 Tube Film Festival will take place on the evenings of August 20th and 21st AT 8:00PM. An Audience Award will be presented for the favorite film as voted by the attendees. Jury Awards will also be presented to the Best Animation, Best Highlight Film, and Best Overall Film. The winning films will receive an optional air on ESPN2 as part of a special Tube Film Festival one hour show.

Film and video submissions must be no longer than 90 minutes, but works under 15 minutes are encouraged. The film or video may be in the form of action, narrative, documentary, animation, or experimental. The work should somehow be connected to the action sports world from which it originates. A separate trailer, no longer than two-minutes in length, should also be included for digital-upload posting to EXPN.com. There is no entry fee.

Application forms and more information are available on the Tube Film Festival mini-site at www.EXPN.com, or by calling the Tube Film Festival Hotline at 408-266-0242. The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2001. Tickets for Tube will go on sale the first week of August - further information to be posted on EXPN.com.

The Seventh Annual X Games will take place August 17-23 in Philadelphia, PA. It will feature the world-class athletic talents of more than 400 alternative sport athletes. The X Games is owned, organized and televised by ESPN, Inc.
