Start by riding at a slow to moderate speed, about as fast as you'd go for a simple endo. I kick the bike counter-clockwise, so I bring my right foot over the frame to the left side of the bike. My left foot remains on the pedal. |
When your ready, stick your foot between the fork and the tire (in my case I'm using the right foot), lock your front brakes and kick the bike around with the foot that is on the pedal. |
You don't need to use brakes, but they will keep the bike from rolling out from under you if you're off balance. |
When the bike begins to swing, pull the handlebars in towards you slightly. This adds to the momentum, allowing the bike to make a full rotation. Pulling the bars also gives the back wheel a little clearance so that it doesn't hit the ground. |
When the bike has made it's full rotation, grab the top tube of the frame with the foot that you used to kick the pedal. Pull the bike into you and let it hit the ground. |
All you have to do now is release your brakes and ride away. |
If you want to get really tricky with tailwhips you can try doubles by jumping the frame as it comes around to you (you'll want to make sure you have front brakes for that one). |
Eventually you can try to work this trick into a nose-pick or even into a tailwhip jump. The combinations with this trick are infinite. Tailwhips are the building blocks for pinky-squeaks, whiplashes and more. |
