Rochelle Ballard continued to lead the charge in women's surfing in 2001 particularly in big, reef wave surfing. She applied this confidence to the opening two contests of the season, reaching the quarterfinals at Cloudbreak in Fiji, and then placing second at Teahupoo in Tahiti. She was a contender for the world title, but was outlasted in the final event by Layne Beachley. Rochelle Ballard is a symbol for everything women's surfing has become, and where it's going.
She continued her contest success in 2001 with a 2nd place finish at the OP Boat Challenge, going wave for wave with Keala Kennelly for the title. "Keala is someone I can match my barrel riding ability with," said Ballard. One wave made the difference between a second title and a second place finish; Ballard won the event in 2000. She is the only woman to score two perfect 10's getting barrels perfectly. "When it comes to barrel riding, she's the Kelly Slater of women's surfing," says Layne Beachley.

Beachley's season was off to a shaky start after an unusually early exit in Fiji, but a late comeback in the treacherous waves of Tahiti put her back on top for good. Winning the Billabong Pro in Tahiti was perhaps her greatest accomplishment of 2001 as it showed how determined she was.
