Profiles for Skateboarder of the Year
Mark Appleyard
Mark Appleyard is at the top of the next wave of the up-and-coming skaters. He received huge coverage in Transworld Skateboarding as well as feature coverage in a variety of other skateboarding magazines throughout 2001 including Thrasher among others. He is featured in the up coming Flip video and had a series of classic segments in some of last year's videos, including Transworld's I.E. and 411Video Magazine's Issues 49 and 50.
Mark Appleyard's obvious skill and ease in mastering the sport's most difficult difficulties make him the envy of skateboarders around the world. Skaters must realize that Mark and his cohorts are the guys who are going to take us to the next level. Teammate Geoff Rowley on Appleyard: "he's incredibly talented. And he's got a lot of heart, and that's more important than anything."

Bob Burnquist continued to redefine vert skateboarding in 2001 with a combination of contest wins and personal feats. He took first place at the Vans Triple Crown Oceanside, won the X Games gold medal in Vert and received the highest score ever (99.0) at Slam City Jam, winning first place in Vert before taking second place in Best Trick. Perhaps the most amazing moment in all of skateboarding last season was Burquist's run that received a score of 99.0 points. It was made up of technical tricks like kickflip rock to fakie, switch rock, switch rock slider, and half cab blunt to frontside.
Recently Bob skated the Norelco LOOP switch stance at the LOOP demo at the Tampa Pro in March 2001. He is the first one to complete the 360-degree rotation switch. "I always wanted to do it and I knew I could do it because I saw Dwayne Peterson and Tony [Hawk] do it so I didn't have to figure out the mathematics." He is revered and respected by his peers, when Bob skates everyone stops and watches in awe. He has incredible ability to do any trick regular or switch stance.

Eric Koston is considered to be one of the most progressive street skaters in the industry. Last year he was on the podium at almost every contest he entered giving him quite an impressive list of results: X Games Street silver medallist, X Games Best Trick Street bronze medallist, Gravity Games Street gold medallist, and first place in Street at the Slam City Jam. He continued to dominate everything he skated, which was showcased in a number of videos including the Es Shoes video. He topped it off with huge coverage in several skate magazines.
Eric received the Skateboarder of the Year award at the ESPN Action Sports and Music Awards on April 7, 2001, and Transworld Readers Choice, Best Street Skater, and Best Video Part. He is so humble about his skating abilities that he said anybody but him deserved the award. Eric was named as the rider who defined the Crooked Grind, also known as a K Grind, in 1994 in the June 2001 issue of Skateboarder Magazine. "I definitely wasn't the first to do it, but maybe I was the first one to do it in a video. It's a trick that I still use in contests." One of his favorite tricks is the backside noseblunt slide because "it's a fun trick and it feels good to do."

Geoff Rowley destroyed everything that he skated this year. He is featured in the upcoming Flip Skateboards video and is one street skater that received incredible coverage in the skateboarding media. Thrasher Magazine bestowed Geoff with the 2001 Skater of the Year award. Transplanted from Liverpool, England, Geoff has been blowing up in the states since his mid-teens. His Vans print ads showing tall ollies down impossibly long ledges and rails are enough to startle even those uninitiated in the world of skateboarding.
Geoff has now been a professional skateboarder for six years and is staying strong. He favors long handrails and huge staircases for grinding purposes. Some of Geoff's favorite moves are doing rock slides, 5-0 grinds, and grinds to fakie. Geoff does not think about what he will do after skateboarding. In fact, he doesn't believe there is anything after skateboarding.
