Bruce Irons • Pipe Masters Champion, he actually beat Slater at Pipe. • Won the exposure-o-meter in Transworld (for the most media exposure). • Spots in surf films like Momentum, Under the Influence by Taylor Steele. • While not ranked in the ratings, he's still one of the best surfers in the world. CJ Hobgood • 2001 ASP Mens World Champion • Finalist in Pipe Masters at Pipeline, Hawaii. • Video segments in Momentum's Under the Influence and In Da House, also distributed by Steelehouse Dist. • 2nd Place Billabong Pro Teahupoo. • Quarter final finish at Bells Beach AUS. • Reef Biarritz Surf Trophee 1st place. • OP Boat Challenge. Andy Irons • A Dominant surfer on the competitive scene. • Second place at the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing in Hawaii, after surfing incredibly well at Sunset. • 1st place at the Billabong USA contest in Huntington Beach, CA. • 2nd Place at the OP Boat Challenge. • Footage of Andy can be seen in Momentum, Under the Influence and through Billabong. Mick Fanning • WQS Champion of 2001. •Surfer Magazine Breakthrough Performer of the Year. • Winner of Bells Beach contest in Australia. • 2nd place Vans Triple Crown of Surfing at Sunset • Can be seen in Momentum, Under the Influence. The Nominees - Women Layne Beachley • 4 time ASP Women's World Champion (crowned this year). • 1st Place at the Billabong Pro AUS. • 1st Place Rip Curl Pro Hossegor, FRA. • 1st place at the Quiksilver Roxy Pro. Rochelle Ballard • Led the charge in womens surfing particualary in big wave surfing. • 2nd place at the OP Boat Challenge. Keala Kenelly • 1st place at the OP Boat Challenge. Janna Meyen • Numerous video segments in XX Hardly Angels, Rail Specialist and the New School of female riders. Megan Abubo • She is quite the accomplished female who keeps her profile low. Other Standout Performers - Men Kelly Slater • He's certainly never one to be counted out. • Slater was not involved with the tour but surfaced in significant events. • Second behind Bruce Irons at the Pipe Masters, and continues to lead the way in modern surfing. Taj Burrow •Taj has had a great year, and was on the bubble to becoming a nominee. • His signature video SaboTAJ is one of the best videos out from this year. •A rounded competitive Australian. Taylor Knox • A strong US surfer, an especially great rail to rail surfer that was in the running for the title going into Hawaii, where he had a disappointing finish. Peter Mel • Peter is an incredible big wave surfer. • Part of the big wave teams that were involved with tow-in surfing at Cortes Bank off of the California coast. 'Flea' Daryl Virtioso •An insane surfer. •Back to back wins at the Quiksilver Mavericks contest. •Tow-in greatness throughout the year. Other Standout Performers - Women All of the women that were making a significant impact in surfing this year were included in the nominees. The exceptions are... Serena Brooke •A ripping free surfer. Pauline Menczer • Great comeback at the end of the season in Hawaii. Kassia Meador • Accomplished longboarder, great style. Notable Feats of the Year • Rochelle Ballard towing into the biggest wave ridden by a women. • Flea's tow-in to Mavericks, December 2001.
