Acts for Sports and Music Awards Show Announced

A star-studded musical performance line-up is in place for the second annual ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards Fueled by Mountain Dew, to be held on April 13, 2002 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. The roster will include live performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z with an all-star band, X-Ecutioners featuring Xzibit, Unwritten Law and 3rd Strike. The one-of-a-kind event that fuses the top action sports athletes and cutting-edge musical artists will be televised on ESPN Tuesday, April 16 at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT). Following is the musical performance lineup for the evening:

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili Peppers, recipients of the event’s Action Sports Artist Contribution Award, have continually innovated the rock music world for nearly two decades through their unique fusion of funk, punk and rock influences. The band’s performance at the Action Sports & Music Awards will mark the first time they have played a U.S. venue in more than a year. Their most recent release, Californication (1999), produced the smash hits, “Scar Tissue,” “Otherside” and “Californication.” In 2000, the band won a Grammy Award for “Scar Tissue” as “Best Rock Song.” The album also landed the band a Grammy in 2001 for “Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.” The band is currently in the studio recording its ninth album, which is scheduled for release this summer.

Jay-Z and All-Star Band
Grammy Award-winning artist Jay-Z will perform with a cast of today’s hottest rock musicians. The All-Star Band will include Fieldy, bassist from Korn; John Otto, drummer from Limp Bizkit; and Wayne Static, guitarist from Static X. Jay-Z's latest album The Blueprint is his sixth in only five years, which has already spawned the hit singles, “IZZO” and "Girls, Girls, Girls." He has established himself as one of hip-hop’s most respected lyricists, and has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.

X-Ecutioners
Three-piece DJ and production crew the X-Ecutioners will perform at the Action Sports & Music Awards with special guest Xzibit, who performed with the group on their Built from Scratch LP. X-Ecutioners bring a new branch of hip-hop to the world; the group uniquely centers their songs around DJ performance. X-Ecutioners' Built from Scratch LP includes performances by Big Pun, Xzibit, Everlast, Triple Threat, Mike Shinoda and Mr. Hahn of Linkin Park and more. The single "It's Goin’ Down" is currently #1 on MTV2, top 10 on MTV and can be found on radio play lists across the country. Built From Scratch entered the Billboard Top 200 at #15 and is currently #31.

Unwritten Law
Emerging from Southern California's skate/surf scene, Unwritten Law has made a name for themselves with a slamming, melodic, big-beat punk-style music featured on their three full-length CD's and touring non-stop since 1995. Their latest release, the best-selling CD "Elva" on Interscope Records features the single, "Seein' Red," which is an MTV hit and is regularly playing on rock and alternative radio stations across the country.

3rd Strike
3rd Strike’s stunning metallic-rap tracks are evocative of frontman Jim Korthe’s hardscrabble life. Their debut release, Lost Angel, hits the streets May 14. 3rd Strike's first single, "No Light," is receiving massive airplay, and is also featured on the soundtrack to ESPN’s Ultimate X, the upcoming action sports large-format film. Look for 3rd Strike touring with Ozzfest this summer.

Last year, More than 6,000 attendees gathered at the Universal Amphitheatre as LL Cool J, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Chris Klein hosted the inaugural Action Sports & Music Awards, April 7, 2001. The event included performances from Black Sabbath, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, Crazy Town, De La Soul featuring Busta Rhymes and Incubus.
