Profiles for Moto X Rider of the Year

Clifford Adoptante
adoptante Clifford Adoptante sat out of most of the early 2001 events, but the "Flyin' Hawaiian" quickly rose to the top. He was the X Games silver medallist in Freestyle, Winter X Games silver medallist in Big Air, Gravity Games silver medallist in Freestyle, and finished in first place at the Vans Triple Crown of Motocross Series.

At Winter X Games V Moto X Big Air, he rode with a sprained right knee, but still grabbed the bronze medal. "I'm pumped," he said after the scores were announced. "In my own opinion I think I rode a little better than some others and I'll just leave it at that." His highest score was with a Double Seat Grab in the first round, but he tried to land a sterilizer, becoming a crowd favorite when he crashed.

Ricky Carmichael
carmichael Ricky Carmichael accomplished a life-long goal by winning the 250cc Supercross title and defeating the King of Supercross, Jeremy McGrath. Along the way, Carmichael won 14 out of 16 events, with an astounding 13 of the wins coming in succession. He also captured the AMA 250cc Motocross championship, taking the overall win at seven rounds of the 12-race series, and two additional overall podium finishes.

Carmichael has always been near the top with his amazing natural ability but he took it to the next level last season. He is one of the few Motocross stars to resist the draw of freestyle Motocross and stick to racing. With 15 wins last year in the 250 cc class including the US Open, 13 victories in a row (which tied Jeremy McGrath's all time win streak record for Supercross), Carmichael was clearly the season's standout.

Brian Deegan
deegan Brian Deegan returned to have a good year after damaging his ankle in 2000. He won a bronze medal in Moto X Big Air at X Games VII, received major interview coverage, and continued to be a standout in the Metal Mulisha crew of riders. Arguably he is the most talented all-around rider on the freestyle circuit, and one of the only full-time freestylers to win a Supercross main event (L.A. 1997, 125cc). Deegan still harbors an urge to race, if he can do it on his own terms.

The promise of a pro racing career lured Brian away from home when he was just 16. He started the now famous Metal Mulisha with Larry Linkogle in the late 1990's. Deegan takes a fearless attitude and great adaptability to the arena every time he competes. His love of big tricks and ability to learn new moves quickly makes him a threat to take over any contest he enters.

Travis Pastrana
pastrana Travis Pastrana took another step towards his goal to "win everything" when he added five wins of the seven 2001 125cc Eastern Region championship to his undefeated freestyle record. Last year, he was the 2001 X Games gold medallist in Freestyle Moto X, silver medallist in step-up at the 2001 X Games, 2001 Gravity Games gold medallist in Freestyle, and won two nationals (of 12) in the 125cc national Motocross Championship Series. On April 7, 2001 Travis secured his first 125cc Eastern Region Supercross title and was also awarded Motocross Athlete of the Year and Motocross People's Choice Athlete of the Year at the Action Sports and Music Awards. He accepted his awards while standing next to fellow nominees Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael in the pits in Pontiac, MI, where the Supercross race had just ended.

"It was a pretty lackluster day. I crashed really hard in practice. I lost my first qualifier and my second main event of the year, taking seconds in both of them, but when all was said and done, I had the number one championship plate, and won the Action Sports and Music Awards. I woke up the next morning feeling really, really good."
