We went internally, into each specific industry to select 10-15 people per sport to form the nominating committees. These committees, made up of team managers, marketing directors, filmmakers, former pros, sport related media and sport icons, formed a list of the most influential and dominant athletes in each sport category. After continuous debate, the nominating committees reached an agreement and the goal of selecting 5 nominees per category was finalized.

While the committees behind The ESPN Action Sport & Music Awards are representative of the action sports' industries, the final voting is left up the athletes themselves to choose their respective Athlete of the Year.

Another group of industry members, made up of those who live and work in a multi-sport environment were assembled to discuss other factors relating to the authenticity and ambience of the show. They put forth their expertise and knowledge of these sports in the nomination discussions for the Lifetime Achievement Award, the music elements and the important inclusion of athlete film and video footage.
