Profiles for BMX Rider of the Year

Van Homan
homan Van Homan has opened more than a few people's eyes the world over in the past year with his progressive street riding, whether it's techno or completely burly. His 2001 season was marked by riding to the next level in the new bmx video Little Devil's Criminal Mischief, it's a nonstop barrage of outrageous tricks.

Van worked really hard on this video, not only riding but also behind the camera. He filmed a lot of the video himself and also had a great deal of input on how he wanted his role to be portrayed.

Dave Mirra
mirra Dave Mirra continued his reign as the most dominant force in Freestyle BMX during 2001. He was the X Games vert gold medallist, the Vans Triple Crown of BMX second place finisher in street, gold medallist in Park at both B3 stops and gold in Vert at the Anaheim, Ca stop of B3. To top it all off, Mirra won Rider of the Year at the ESPN Action Sports and Music Awards in April, 2001.

He is also the most decorated athlete in X Games history with 12 medals coming into 2001 (nine gold/three silver). He excels at both vert and park riding, medalling in every X Games event he has ever entered. Mirra broke the World Record for highest air out of a vert ramp, flying 19 feet over the deck in January of 2001, in San Diego, CA. Mirra's record is not official however, as no Guinness World Record judges were on-hand to witness the event.

Dave and Slim Jim teamed up for the 2001 Dave Mirra BMX Supertour. The summer tour features stops at skate/bike parks around the country. The tour kicked off April 28 at Dave's hometown park, JC Park, in Greenville, NC. The purpose of the tour is "all about the lifestyle," according to Dave.

Stephen Murray
murray Stephen Murray was back with a vengeance in 2001 after a series of broken bones and bad luck in 2000. He was the X Games gold medallist in dirt jumping and Gravity Games gold medallist in dirt jumping, the two top contests of the season. Stephen stomped the double back flip on dirt to seal both major victories.

Stephen is a high-octane English rider and lives in Riverside, Calif. "I started racing when I was three years old. I raced until I was 18. I did a dirt jump contest when I was 18, and I won it and I was like, maybe I should think about doing this more than racing. I wasn't really having fun racing anymore. All the tracks were kinda flat and lame, and all I wanted to do was tricks while I was racing. So I thought jumping was gonna be way better for me."

Ryan Nyquist
nyquist Ryan Nyquist pushed the technical aspect of dirt jumping farther than anyone in the 2001 season. He is an all around great rider and won the 2001 X Games silver medal in dirt jumping as well as the Bike Stunt Series' coveted belt for 2001 in Park. At the first two events of the 2001 season, the B3 Anaheim and B3 Louisville, he took second place at both events in Park.

Although he views dirt jumping as his strong point, Nyquist is quick to point out he is "not just a dirt jumper", he is "a freestyle BMX rider." He continued his diverse season with a first place finish in dirt and street at the 2001 Vans Triple Crown in Salt Lake City.
