The 2001 Action Sports & Music Awards

Last year's debut of the ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards highlighted the glue like bond between action sports participants and the bands that influence them. From hip-hop to straight-ahead rock, there has always been a close connection between action sports and the music that plays at any good session. These awards are more like a big party than anything as serious as, let's say The Grammy's, so what you gotta do is imagine your favorite pros dressing up in their flyest gear, pulling up to the curb in ridiculous limos, taking the walk down the green carpet, sayin what up to their peeps, the whole time parlayin' and politicin' with all their favorite bands. Damn this thing is exciting.

So you may be wondering how these nominated athletes are picked, so here's a quick breakdown - The nominees are selected by a committee comprised of industry figures like team managers, marketing directors, filmmakers and former pros in order to keep things legit. After months of heated debate the committees decided on five nominees for each category. But the committees aren't the ones who pick the winners; those are actually determined by two things:

1) The ESPN Action Sports & Music Award is chosen by the athlete community itself - it's the pros who decide which one of their people win each category. So no one can hate on that podium spot.
2)The Mountain Dew People's Choice Award is chosen by you! That's right, you can decide who gets the vote for each category. The people's choice award is announced both here at EXPN.com and at the event itself, so keep you eyes peeled for the results.

This year the awards will be held on April 3rd, 2002 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, California. The same folks from last year plus some new faces will all be there rockin' their Sunday fancies and partying it up with friends, fam and the bands they love. That's right folks, it's Round 2.

So check the results from last year plus some quotes to get your little mind racing about who's gonna take home the podium in Y2K02.
