COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA - The coveted Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Event has come to a close with Ross Clarke-Jones winning in perfect 20-foot surf. On Saturday January 13, 2001 Ross surfed his way to victory, taking home $50,000 by catching four solid Waimea Bay screamers.

Ross dominated the event compiling 319 points out of a possible 400 points total. Throughout the day Ross lived up to his reputation as being one of top big wave riders by pulling off late drops and selecting the best waves. The two closest competitors finishing behind Clarke-Jones were Shane Dorian with a total of 292 points, and Paul "Antman" Paterson with 283 points. 6-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater finished fifth with a point total of 270.

"The Eddie" was once again a success. The contest, which is dedicated to big-wave surfing pioneer Eddie Aikau, was blessed with clean 20-foot surf with 48 of the top big wave riders charging. The event truly pushed the competitors to the limit both physically and mentally and left Ross Clarke-Jones standing as the world's best big-wave rider. Quiksilver congratulates Ross for being the first non-Hawaiian to ever win this big wave contest.

That's a big check! Jones hoists $50,000 worth of cardboard.
