On the heels of the California recall election, voting for the Quiksilver In Memory Of Eddie Aikau contest has begun. Familiar names like Kelly Slater (last year's winner), Clyde Aikau, Johnny Boy Gomes and Sunny Garcia appear on the ballot alongside new candidates Makua Rothman, Bruce and Andy Irons, and Kala Alexander. The contest will only be held if the waves reach above the 20-foot marker at the infamous Wiamea Bay. If not, the contest will be put on hold 'til next year. Hopefully for surf fans everywhere, Mother Nature will provide some monsters for the contest.

Rob Machado and friend Jon Swift played a live set of acoustic guitar wizardry at the Martini Ranch in Encinitas on September 25. A small crowd witnessed some great music, including songs from Thicker Than Water and Shelter.
Congratulations to Made Adi Putru, aka "Bol", who won the 2003 Quiksilver Indonesia Open series. Bol won two out of three contests, and took second in the third contest to Rizal Tanjung. Bol plans to spend his winnings building a new house in Kuta Beach.
Nathan Webster had a shocker in Baja this month. While surfing a small beach break in Northern Baja, Webby launched an air and landed wrong, compound fracturing his tibia. Not wanting to risk a foreign doctor, Nathan chartered a flight from Mexico to Los Angeles for a whopping $20,000. After the American doctor fixed him up, he flew to Australia and learned the Aussie docs wanted to put pins in his leg. A brave Webby disagreed and flew back to L.A. for a non-pin procedure.

Monday, September 30, Rob Machado and fellow surf pros Benji Weatherly, Nathaniel Curran, Peter King, Jeff Baldwin and Jeff Hurley ditched their wetsuits for a little dry-land competition at the second-annual Rob Machado Par Three Experience a charity golf tournament and silent auction held in Solana Beach, CA, to benefit the Rob Machado Foundation and Boarding for Breast Cancer. Canadian superstar Renne Renne performed a few tracks off his soon-to-be-released CD and Team Hurley, captained by Jeff, took the overall prize.
