Local Boy Goes Big
10.01.01Press Release For Immediate Release (Oct. 1, 2001) Malibu, CA -- The biggest stars in the world of freestyle motocross dirt jumping are going to rock Music City this Friday and Saturday night, Oct. 5 & 6, at the Nashville Auditorium for the ESPN FreeRide Moto-X Championships, presented by THQ. Headlining the heart-stopping the action of riders hitting 100-foot-plus gaps and pulling off insane, adrenaline-pumping tricks are legends like multiple X Games medallist Brian Deegan of the Metal Mulisha, Clifford Adoptante fresh off a pair of wins at the Vans Triple Crown and the legendary "Mad" Mike Jones, among many others. But hoping to make a name for himself with these Big Dogs of Freestyle - as well as grab precious X Games Qualifying points - is local rider, Robbie King, 25. Born and raised in Donelson, TN, just outside of downtown Nashville, King graduated from McGavock High School and went on to the Nashville State Area Vocational Technical School, where he gained an Airframe and Power Plant license, appropriate enough for a man who uses motor power to get airtime on his dirt bike. King has proved his mettle in the past, not only competing in the local AMA District 34 races, but practicing his riding techniques under the Whitestone Bridge in New York City, which included dealing with local gang members who used the same locale as their hangout. King was in NY getting a degree as an Avionics Technician. "Oh man, you wouldn't believe the stories I could tell!" says King, who graduated and later transferred to Los Angeles "so I could be near the home of freestyle motocross and all the heroes I'll be competing against back in my home town. I can't believe it!" When not practicing freestyle, King is still employed in the airline industry. "My next challenge in life is that I am likely to be laid off because of the World Trade Center tragedy," says King. "It seems that fate wants me to step up my riding career, but may God help us all from this tragedy." General admission tickets are just $16 in advance. Friday night is Family Night - buy one adult ticket and one child under 12 is free. Saturday night all kids under 12 are half price. Purchase a Gold Circle reserved seat and receive the award-winning home video, Freeride Revolution, a $24.99 value, absolutely free (one per family- box office only). Tickets available at the box office, Ticketmaster and all America's Motorsport locations.
