Asia’s Definitive Action Sports Competition Bangs Into Singapore 2001 Asian Xtour Singapore presented by Toyota Hits Orchard Road this Weekend

6 December 2001, Singapore: The six-city action sports event in Asia, the Asian Xtour presented by Toyota, reaches its last and final leg when it hits Singapore this weekend in search of the island’s top action sports athletes. Atheletes who finish in the top three within their sport category will represent the city state in the Asian X Games Qualifier IV presented by Toyota in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 27 January to 3 February 2002.

The Asian Xtour is the premier action sports event in Asia. Previous tour stops this year were Shanghai, Bangkok, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur and Manila. The best action sports athletes from these stops were chosen to compete in the Asian X Games Qualifier IV for a chance to win Asia Pacific’s most coveted honour: to represent the region in ESPN’s X Games in the USA.

Taking place on 8 and 9 December 2001 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza along Orchard Road, the 2001 Asian Xtour Singapore presented by Toyota will feature the city state’s best action sports athletes in three sport categories on a park course: skateboarding, bicycle stunt (park and flatland) and aggressive in-line skating. Competitors can qualify under one of two categories – Main X and Junior X for those 14 years old and under.

This weekend’s competition is the only avenue for Singaporean skateboarding, bicycle stunt and aggressive in-line skating athletes to qualify for the Asian X Games Qualifier IV presented by Toyota. The Singaporean athletes qualifying for this regional event will compete for a share of US$100,000 in prize money, medals and an invitation to compete in ESPN’s X Games VIII, to be held in Philadelphia, USA in August 2002.

ESPN STAR Sports Vice President for Event Management Richard Young said: “We’ve consistently received overwhelming participation in the five cities we’ve already visited this year, we’re confident that we’ll have a good turn out here in Singapore as well. Altogether, more than 1,500 athletes competed in Shanghai, Bangkok, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur and Manila where the best in each city were chosen and given the opportunity to compete in the Asian Qualifier in Kuala Lumpur next year.
We have also entertained over 100,000 spectators on the tour. We eagerly anticipate more participants and spectators this weekend than last year as we mark the second consecutive year the tour hits.
