KLCC 28 JANUARY – 3 FEBRUARY 2002 28 January 2001, Kuala Lumpur: Junior X competition kicked off today after Prime Minister, Dr. Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad officially opened the event to the public; 14,500 spectators enjoyed opening day of competition ESPN Junior X Games III presented by Toyota at the KLCC. During the official ceremonial opening by Malaysian dignitaries, the famed Japanese In-liners, Eito and Takeshi Yasutoko soared above the lip of the vert ramp, leaving the crowd and Prime Minister in awe! Equally awed and proud were the spectator’s when Malaysian spectators were proud when 12-year-old Shariman Rusdee Bin Murshidi, a bicycle stunt athlete from Sarawak, Malaysia proudly claimed first place in the bicycle stunt park competition. Shariman’s gold medal was an ideal way to launch the first staging on Malysian soil of the ESPN Junior X Games III and Asian X Games Qualifier IV presented by Toyota. Aggressive In-line competition was once again dominated by the Australians. Making a strong showing from the powerful Thai inline team was Surawat Bomrungkij who finished in third. Soaring to new heights, throwing their feet over their heads were two strong 13 year olds. After two exciting runs, Nicolas Schopfer overtook the always strong CJ Wellsmore to finish in first while Wellsmore walked home with second. New prizes are up for grabs this year with the introduction of the Best Tricks competition which will take place during tomorrow’s (29 January, Tuesday) competitions. The sponsor interactive village and spectator stands will be open to the public at 10:00am tomorrow. * * * * * 70 action athletes 14 years old and under compete this week at the ESPN Junior X Games III in bicycle stunt, skateboarding, aggressive in-line skating and sport climbing. Countries and territories represented are China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea. The ESPN Junior X Games III and the Asian X Games Qualifier IV presented by Toyota enjoy high-level sponsorship support from Presenting Sponsor Toyota, Official Partners Toshiba, adidas, TMNet and TMTouch and Official Supporters Polaroid and Milo. Astro is the Official Cable Partner and HitzFM is the Official Radio Station. The Government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sport is co-hosting the Qualifier. ESPN will televise the Asian X Games Qualifier IV presented by Toyota to more than 140 countries and territories around the globe.
