Well, that's all folks. Turn out the lights. X Games 14 is done and so am I.
Want to hear a funny story?
No?
Cool. Here it is...
Last week I was talking to Anti Hero, Peter Hewitt and he was telling me how much he hates contests. I told him he should consider entering SuperPark and winning some money. That set up was tailor-made for a guy like Peter. Anyway, I had mailed him out a box of DvDs like I do for so many of my friends in the skateboard world and he was stoked. He texted me to say thanks. Two seconds later, my friend Matt Barker from Tum Yeto, (makers of Foundation and Toy Machine skateboards, Pig wheels and Dekline shoes) texted me to ask about doing a demo for my shop, NJ Skateshop. Recently I fried my phone and lost all my numbers. After getting those texts, somehow I saved Barker's number as Hewitt's and Hewitt's number as Barker's. For the past four days I've been texting Barker when I thought I was texting Hewitt. So when I thought I was telling Peter he should come to SuperPark and claim his money, and I got a response that read: "On the way!" It was actually Barker I was texting.

Yesterday, hours before SuperPark elimination started, I thought I was texting Hewitt to see where he was. "Watching motocross. Section 129, top of the steps," was the response. So I went over there to have a drink with him. But didn't see him. Just Barker. "Where are you? I don't see you," I texted. Barker texted back, "You're looking at me!"

That's when I learned I'd been talking to the wrong guy all along. So yeah, I'm an idiot. And Hewitt didn't skate. He was there. He just didn't skate. But he should, have-in full pads. Just kidding. But he should have skated because there'd be nothing more poetic to me than two Anti Heros grabbing spots in the Top 3 and taking the money and running. Maybe next year.

As for the overall week, in my mind:

1st place went to Big Air for the drama
2nd place goes to SuperPark for being something new.
And 3rd place goes to Street for the simple fact that it's not vert.

As for me, this has been the best experience of my entire life. Better than meeting my wife, better than opening our third NJ Skateshop in Hoboken, New Jersey this Friday 8-8-08. It's been better than getting married, better than the birth of my un-conceived child. X Games 14. If only I could freeze time and make it never end.

Winding Down

Chad Bartie back tails where few would want to drop-in.

Josh Brooks is an Official Sponsor of X Games 14!
Just kidding. I don't have any money to give and the market in 40-blade shavers is cornered. I have nothing to offer except for my opinion. If I had the budget and time, I would make a short montage of all the wonderful moments—the unruly security guards throwing me out while I'm trying to interview skatesr, the post-Big Air knee-sliding, the celebratory hand shaking and, in all seriousness, the stomping skating and the interesting people.

Each skating event delivered a little something I couldn't have expected. The big winners—Bob, Sheckler, PLG, Glifberg—and crowd favorites like Shaun White are never too surprising, because they're good at skating and because they want to win more than the rest of the guys.

But, part of the reason Nieratko and I were here was to let whomever reads this in on a little more than the results of the events. I like to imagine I can shrink Bob, PLG, Glifberg and Sheckler into their younger selves and imagine what they would want to see if they were sitting in front of a computer logging in from their distant home countries or from their massive house in San Clemente.

Maybe it's giving them too much credit, but I think that along with hearing about who may or may not win, the little Bobs, Shecklers, PLGs and Glifbergs of the world might want to read about the true nuttiness of Danny Way. maybe they want to hear about the lovable dirtbags like Leo Romero or TNT's wild skating. They might want to see what Koston or Rowley were doing. They might want to hear Corey Duffel's take on his scruff with Beagle. Or maybe they'd want to learn about how Alex Perelson's making vert look fun again. Maybe, they would want to read about how the girl's Street Competition was pretty enjoyable to watch, too.

I don't know. Maybe that's too much to expect. But, in the end, alongside all the results and medals these are some of the funnier and more unique things the X Games delivered. I hope the mini-Bobs, PLGs, Glifbergs and even Shecklers enjoyed. Maybe they exist, maybe they don't.

SuperPark Finals

Rune Snatches Gold

In the Winner's Circle: Andy Mac, Rune Glifberg and Tony Trujillo

Josh Brooks

Rune killed it on national television.

SuperPark is over and it lived up to the hype. Despite not really being happy with the set up, Rune Glifberg did what he was supposed to do, destroy every corner of the park and took first place. Andy Mac took second with some Mac-nificently, padded maneuvers. It was nice to see him cut loose and take off the wrist guards. The people's champ, the man that I can't ever get enough of, TNT, took third. Tony hadn't been to the X-Games since 2004 when he took 7th place in Men's Street, so it was rad getting to see him out there in his element killing it. I'm glad he won some money with his little baby boy on the way. Good stuff, Tony. Thanks for coming down and making this event a whole lot more fun to watch.

Omar, sorry. We all know you should have had 2nd. Just know we appreciate what you do and enjoy watching you out there. Same to Chad Bartie. Backtail on that huge box? Come on. The world owes you a beer. You too, Hewitt. You killed it today.

Time from legends of vert. Nothing like the smell of 30 years of pad sweat in the morning.

SuperPark Questions the Answers

August 3, 2008, 5:48 PM

Tony Trujillo was the dark horse crowd pleaser throughout SuperPark. TNT! Dynamite!

The question mark Tony Trujillo had spraypainted on his shirt is a pretty fitting symbol, since no one expected him to show up the first day of SuperPark. It's also the best kind of symbol that can pop up over your head while watching people skate a bowl. It's all fine and dandy to see someone stick the same stuff with consistency, but when a skater comes out and goes nuts, the finals become less like a gymnastics competition and more like a backyard jam.

Josh Brooks

Tony had some moves hidden in that case of his.

When the results came through, Glifberg got first, Andy Mac got second and TNT gave everybody a big question mark over their head with a third place finish. But, like I said, a "huh?" or a "what?" makes things so much nicer in the finals. It wasn't until TNT (donning an exclamation point on his shirt) started improvising, flying around the course doing whatever, wherever that the rest of them really though about trying something new. Even Andy Mac did some things, that if not on my favorite list, were pretty surprising.

Congrats to Glif and Mac and thanks to Tony and Mic-E Reyes' Daughter for the bizarre handcuff briefcase theatrics. Most fun event to watch so far.

Ryan Flynn

Kyle Berard didn't make the finals but he was ripping all weekend. Shakka Brutha!
