2001 US Open Big Air Results

While the usual grumbling could be heard throughout the weekend, it is fair to say that Open's loose judging format was not truly tested until the big air, when Adam Schrab's switch double back flip 180 was knocked out in the second round by Phil Belanger's corked out 900 tail grabs--a far more stylie and unarguably less technical trick. In addition, Rex Thomas threw three different tricks consistently in the semis versus Boyd Easley, who threw the same rodeo nine all night. Still, the overall level competition as high as any in the sport's young history, and over 2,000 people braved the cold under the lights to check the gnar, yo.

By the time the beer had begun to freeze in the can, Tanner Hall added an Open victory and $6000 to his X Games gold and Huckfest first place with a switch rodeo seven. Boyd's rodeo nine got bigger and better, earning him second place. And Phil Belanger threw another podium finish into his weekend by corking that 900 tail grab out just enough to edge Thomas out for third.

We call it jibbing. Mogul skiers prefer to call it New Freestyle. Glen Plake thinks we're all full of crap and that it is simply hot-dogging.
