This is the last leg of the tour. We lost some of the posse in Austin due to injury. Our crew is down to Cory, Nate, Rooftop, Kevin, Simon and myself. Chad Kagy is going to meet up with us when we get to LA. We arrived around 1:30pm and headed to Activision HQ. It’s a Sunday, so I thought it would be a good day to visit so we don’t bug all the workers. Once we got there, it was so quiet that we decided it would be more fun to take a tour when the building is in full force and we can meet and harass everyone. We went to Hollywood and checked into the hotel and got some rest for Cory’s house tomorrow.

We get up and roll to Cory’s around noon. We drive out to the middle of nowhere, and then roll up to a chillin’, dirt jumpin’ Mecca around 2:30. He has the set-up; nice house, family, cooking up a feast, and a pile of dirt jumps in his backyard looking over a valley. You get to chose two lines when you’re rolling into his jumps. One has a nice rhythm leading into a huge left hip or you can go for the glory jump. You have to hit a set up and pump it nice and clean to get the speed to hit a huge Knievel launch. “Whitesnake” was throwing down backflip tailwhips over the big launcher. Kevin got his dirt on, and threw some no handed loops, clearing the glory jump. Stephen Murray was there, going big with turndown flips, and Brian Foster (the falcon), was flowin’ the rhythm, and riding the way only Brian can. All the locals were there in full effect schooling everyone. I kicked back, had some great barbeque, and watched the mayhem. I now know where Cory harvests his style. He ripped it up and made for a great host.

After the session at Cory’s we jumped on the road and tried to time it so we would miss the LA traffic. We don’t have the best timing, so we exited and swung by Ride BMX. We hooked up with Losey and Keith Mulligan. Lew and I went through old photos for my book and took a tour of their space. The last time I visited the Ride office was in ’93 at Brad McDonald’s first office space in his apartment. My crew and I didn’t have a place to stay so we crashed out on the floor of Brad’s house. I was messing around with the computer the magazine was made on, and I crashed it. That definitely wasn’t the best way to insure an invite back when I needed a place to stay, but regardless, it looks like Ride grew into a magazine that has the staff the size of a circus with Losey and Keith as the ring leaders.

Traffic died down so we rolled back to the Mondrian for some “chichi” sleep because tomorrow is the last stop of the tour. Bob Burnquist's ramp. I’ve heard so much about this ramp and still have never seen a picture. The same crew that built my ramps and office space at HB also built Bob’s set up. I got the whole low down on his set up through the ramp building masters Dave Ellis and Mike Cruze, while they were building it. I can’t wait to see it, but first I must get some sleep.

Over and out -Mat
