Jacksonville, Fla., is the largest city in the contiguous United States in land area, checking in at 840 square miles. It is also home of Kona Skatepark, the longest running skatepark in the world and the host for the first CFB for 2001. On the first day of the four-day event, we had the pro/am bowl jam. It was actually lots of snake runs and hips, which made for great lines and plenty of crazy stunts.

Ten competitors rode a 25-minute jam format. Somebody you never expected to ride pools and rip was Tim "Fuzzy" Hall. I was stoked to see him ride. Matt Beringer was crank flipping all over the place. Florida native Rob Nolli had some good lines and threw a tailwhip off of the vert wall. Psycho, a man with no plan other than destroying everything in his path, was jumping higher and farther into the snake run and did a crazy flip for his final trick. Alister Whitton came all the way from England to try to gap over the whole snakerun, it was sick.

Mat Hoffman almost didn't ride the bowl contest but I'm glad he changed his mind because I watched him drop off a 12-foot roof into a bowl, then go up an oververt quarter with an 8-inch deck, land with both wheels on top before dropping back in. Nor Cal's Rob Darden was ripping this pack. He was jumping from the bowl to the snake run like it was just any old jump; tailwhips, one-handed x-ups and 360s. The winner of this bowl event was another Nor Cal rider by the name of Ryan O'Connel. He was doing stuff all over the bowls, tech stuff and some crazy flips and 360 turndown transfers.
There hasn't been a bowl contest like this in a long time and I was stoked to see everybody get crazy.
